Beloved friend and Renaissance scholar of languages . . .

Joanna died tragically in an auto accident.

I first got to know Joanna in my Latin III class.  We hit it off right from the first day she walked into my class with her zest for life, her offbeat attitude, and her ragtag backpack in tow.  Besides our interest in languages, we shared a similar interest and passion about music and computers.  Many were the times, either at lunch or after class, when we would talk about the latest concerts that we had seen or the new CDs that we had purchased.  In fact, we would often exchange CDs and introduce each other to different bands and sounds.

When Joanna came to West Essex one could readily see that she was quite different.  Indeed, to me she was a much needed breath of fresh air.  High school is a time when there is a lot of pressure to fit in and be one of the crowd.  Joanna never bowed to that pressure.  She was always her own unique and creative person.  Some of her peers did not accept that, but Joanna never let that criticism deter her from being true to her own nature.
